Vasari on the Pietà: “It is certainly a miracle that a formless block of stone could ever have been reduced to a perfection that nature is scarcely able to create in the flesh.”
“The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.” Michelangelo
I saw this statue back in 1971 and have pictures of it. It is truly a work of art. I also saw the statue of David and the one of Moses. God has given some amazing talent to people over the years. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could see the potential beauty in each other as artists like Michelangelo saw these likenesses in a block of marble before he began to carve. I think we would be much more careful about chipping away at others – afraid to damage the image within.
A gift from above. These talents are God given and a true treasure. Imagine ever owning such a piece. This is one of my favorites-I own a very small sculpture in marble that always makes me dream of owning one like these.
We all have extraordinary gifts from God. Chiseling away at our rough exterior will bring out the beauty within that only God can see until we unveil it through trust and dependence on Him. Lovely statue.
This is my favorite statue.
Mine is David. I have a 4-foot likeness in my backyard.
ahh for the masters of the past to be found a few like this today, we can but dream
thank you for sharing the beauty
WOW, what a beautiful post and I love his quote! Well done, Linnea!

No, there really isn’t.

Beautiful! I just love the expressions Michelangelo was able to capture. Amazing!
